Layering your winter clothes can be challenging at times, especially if you want to copy certain looks and then to your dismay you discover that the outfit doesn’t exactly look as you’d anticipated…hello knits tucked in skirts:) One key point to keep in mind when layering clothes in winter is ‘textures’; if you wear an oversized sweater under your tailored long jackets it will undoubtedly bunch up. So are there any other styling secrets that we are not aware of? There are ways around these problems however, so let’s explore them together.
1 || Swap Button Up Shirts For Cardigans
If you love to keep your blazers going for winter but hate piling thick sweaters under them then opt for a cosy cardigan instead. Not only are cardigans having a major moment right now, you can tuck them into your jeans or your pleated midi skirts, keep them out, or belt them.
2 || Make Use of Thin Turtlenecks
Another trending item this season is the paper-thin or tissue-thin turtleneck. Stock up on these basics in your favourite classic colors but don’t forget to add a patterned one and another neon one to keep things fun and fashionable.
3 || Knits And Skirts
The trick to wearing a cosy knit tucked into a skirt, be it a slip skirt or any other, is to choose a short knit that can fit in easily under the skirt without bulking up your waist. When in doubt play around with colors, patterns, and fabrics; a monochrome silhouette is always slimming. You can also wear your sweater over your skirt and add a belt on it. And a patent leather skirt would look fabulous with a soft cotton knit.
4 || Layer Two Not One
Despite our built-in perceptions…we can actually layer two jackets instead of using just one. You can get away with sporting a cropped puffer jacket over your long cardigan, trench or duster when the going gets tough and the temperatures dip.
5 || Belt It
Say you’ve layered your thin turtleneck, your dress, and cardigan, and your slouchy boots …if it all starts to feel a bit much all you have to do is to just cinch it with belt.
6 || The Belted Coat
The best way to top off any winter outfit even if it’s a winter suit is by layering a belted coat on top. All the better if the coat sports a thin lapel and a straight hem.
7 || Keep It Snug
Another layering tip is to keep the bottom layer snug, be it a skirt or pants. You can layer a boxy cropped top over a button down with your slim leather skirt instead of tucking everything in.
8 || Embrace The Cape
Another perfect piece of outwear that can handle all the layers underneath is the cape. Wear it long or short and you can still be on trend.
