The sun is still out, and you may even be experiencing a heat wave, yet, the minute we turn the proverbial page of the calendar to September, suddenly all your Summer favorite start looking a little dated. We’ve put together some fool-proof suggestions to keep you looking au courant in the last month of summer.
Trade In Your Summer Dress for a Fitted Knit Version
Thankfully not all knits are made the same, and no we don’t mean wool knits 😉 Thanks to the world of material innovation in the world of fashion, there are a plethora of wonderful knits in anything from cotton, to bamboo and everything in between. These knit dresses are usually midi and three quarter sleeved, but their usual deep v neckline and side slits keep things quite light and summery. Pick out a dress in a color that will show off your summer tan, and keep in mind fall’s favorite shades, chocolate and red!
Trade In Your Sweats for a Tailored Pair
Ok don’t panic just yet, you can still wear those roomy sweatpant shapes that you probably haven’t parted with since March 15, all we are saying is, formalize them by opting for tailoring fabrics or leather options. All the things you loved about the sweatpants from drawstring waists to pockets and tapered ankles, just a better fit for your fall knit tops and shirts. Try a pair of leather sweatpants with a knit bralette and twinset from Zara, for example, or a men’s pinstripe pant cut in the style of a sweatpant, matched to your favorite tank top and cropped jacket.
Trade In Your Ripped Boyfriend Jeans for a Wide Leg Patchwork Pair
There isn’t enough that can be said about patchwork this fall season, perhaps it’s a reflection of how we have been forced to patch our lives back together.. At any rate, patchwork denim of the high-waisted wide leg variety is exactly what you need to update your look. Match it to your favorite satin camisole and trench and you are definitely good to go.
Trade in Your Flat Slippers for A Heeled Sandal
Well if you are to wear wide legged jeans then it makes sense that you will need to wear heels, unless of course you are a 6 foot tall model. Opt for a chunky heeled sandal, and possibly even a platform and if you have any metal hardware of chain accessories on the sandals then even better. One of the hottest trends of fall is actually accessorized shoes and clothing, lots and lots of chains everywhere!
Put A Trench On It
We couldn’t think of what to trade in for fall’s staple, the trench. Chances are you haven’t been wearing anything ‘over’ all summer long. Well add a short, lightweight trench to your favorite tank or slip dress. An alternative to the chunky sandal that we were suggested above is of course the leather loafer, which you can use to replace your trusted canvas or leather espadrilles. When wearing loafers, just make sure your ankles show, that keeps things light enough for summer.
Trade Your Raw Cottons for Silks
We were reluctant to add this one, simply because silk looks pretty unappetizing when its wrinkled and stained with sweat, so save this one for a cool evening, or days when the temperature has gone down substantially. Silks looked so beautiful on the fall runways and we wish they would look so glamorous in real life.. Matched to perfectly chunky knits and oversized blazers we’re literally in silk heaven. Again, it’s a fantastic trend and certainly one to consider, just opt for the right occasion.
Wear This Over That
One of the greatest surprises for fall was the reemergence of the vest. Worn over your favorite shirt or long sleeved top, this is really something we haven’t seen in a while. The weather is too hot to layer in this way, but the same actually holds true of a spaghetti strap dress, add a t-shirt to it for an updated early fall look.
