Before you hit the beach and the swimsuit shops for that matter, make sure you have read through this article. There is a particularly feminine flair to the swimwear trends this season, possibly a response to the #metoo movement, yeah, remember that! Well, if you do the math you will realize that the trends you are wearing today were created over a year ago. And what a difference a year can make! Ok, let’s get started.
It’s A Wrap
There are all sorts of wrap-around versions this season. Most of them are cut-out of the swimsuit, and wrap around the waist or bust in some fashion. It’s most likely inspired by a scarf, so the ties are created that way. We are not really talking about traditional bikini strings although some of those exist as well.
Looks Like A Scarf
There are two very different directions this season, either a particularly structured swimsuit style, and we’ll get to that in a bit. Or swimsuits that have little shape at all, taking us once again to the scarf inspiration mentioned above. It reminds me of those fabulous Japanese gift wraps made of, you guessed it, scarves! These swimsuits tend to have little in the way of real coverage or hold. The swimsuit fabric is soft and usually double-faced which allows it to wrap well, but it won’t hold you in..
As mentioned above, scarf-inspired swimwear is everywhere, so it only makes sense for scarves themselves to be used as swimwear. Not for the water obviously, but bra tops are being fashioned out of large square silk scarves, bandeau or halter style. Matched to your favorite bottoms the look is actually quite appealing. If you do choose to go with this option, please refrain from putting a silk scarf in your hair 😉
Yep, the under-boob trend is in fact a thing. Skimpy bikini triangle tops sit in the middle of your breast, leaving the under-boob exposed. Well you would obviously need to be small-busted for this and don’t forget the sunblock!!!!
Like we said, swimwear seems to be heading in one of two directions, flimsy and structured. The corset which has become a timeless piece in the world of fashion, cropping up every few seasons, is a strong trend for swimwear (and fashion) this season. These corsets are possibly matched to structured belts and or high-waisted bottoms to keep with the spirit of the look, sexy and sultry.
Off The Shoulder
Yes you have seen it before, and yes it is kind of ridiculous to wear because it kind of constricts the movement of your arms, but we aren’t judging just reporting ;). That’s probably why they created that even more ridiculous style, with the sleeve sitting separate to the bandeau, on the arm. Seriously, What a tan-line!
Fabrics and Finishes
This is probably a really good season to own a knit swimsuit. Unlike past seasons where the crochet bikinis with absolutely no structure or coverage were trending, this season’s knit swimsuits are lined with a traditional lycra back, so you get the best of both worlds, structure and design. There are also a lot of iridescent swimsuits, shiny metallics in soft colors, running the gamut from light pink to bronze.
The Shoelace Detail
There are plenty of shoelace details out there this season. The interesting thing about this trend is that it’s almost part of a trend but not one in and of itself. There are plenty of shoelace details seen with off the shoulder and iridescent styles.
Anything you can imagine on an evening dress has been incorporated into the couture swimwear trend. Not for everyone, this trend certainly has its fans. Super high-waisted bottoms with an exaggerated ruffle or bow detail. Mesh inserts that look like stretched chiffon, and of course gold hardware. You know those thick chains that are trending in the world of jewelry, well they have migrated to the swimwear world.
Cutouts and One-Shoulder
There are some trends that have become timeless, as I type this, I am thinking, ‘stating that cutouts and one-shoulder are trending is like saying that string bikinis are trending’, they have become staples and they never really go away. So pull out that cutout or one-shoulder piece from a past season and wear it again and again. Handle it with care, you’ll need it for many seasons to come !!
