It all started with Blake Lively…Dressed in a top-to-bottom three piece suit by Versace, it was clear she was onto something…
Well, fast forward to 2019 and neons have become a summer staple. If you are still reluctant to try this Eighties trend, here are a few points to keep in mind.
Keep It Chic
Unless you are Hailey or Justin Bieber we would recommend you refrain from baggy sweats and t-shirts in shades of neon. Summer neons look best when dressed up, they actually goes hand in hand with chic tailoring. Whether its a chic pantsuit or tailored bustier and skirt, this look is a gentle reminder that you didn’t just roll out of bed, or worst, that you’re still stuck in the Eighties.
Speaking of Eighties
Neons are synonymous with the Eighties. There are very specific items that were worn during that era that you should probably do without. Case in point, plastic jewelry in neon shades.. hoops and bangles specifically. Also, although seen on the runways, it would be safe to assume that top to bottom, over-sized neon bright suits with mega shoulder pads should be left on the runway. Another thing to avoid: graphic tees with neon slogans. Many of us have been their and done that. We’ve said it before, if you recall a certain fashion era, wear it differently the second time round, lest they think you’re still stuck in a time wrap.
If You Fear the Clothes…Stick to 2019 Accessories
Ok, no problem.. you don’t want to wear neon. That doesn’t mean you can’t wear neon sneakers, neon accents in your clothing or better still neon-lucite heels and handbags. As previously mentioned, when it comes to accessories stick with materials that are translucent not solid.
Colorblocking May Be Counterintuitive But It Works
You would probably assume that wearing more than one neon color will generate more attention but it’s not true. Breaking the look up with smaller blocks of color actually helps draw the eye to the smaller segments, therefore creating less impact.
The Neutral You Need in Your Life
If you want to match your neons to a neutral, we would recommend you steer clear of black..again it’s too eighties. An egg-shell white will do nicely to calm things down. Although a safari beige also works it kind of kills the bright freshness of the neon…
You may see these as sun-faded shades of neon or even bright ice cream shades, either way they are smooth enough to deliver the necessary color punch without going all out with traditional neon shades. From banana yellows to bright pistachios, there is a color that works best for you.
So What Color Suits You Anyway?
Well, you could probably get away with any shade of neon, but there is undoubtedly a shade that suits you best…. Are you cool-toned? Well if silver and rose gold suits you then yes you are. The neon colors that suit you best would be pink and yellow. If you are warm-toned, with yellow gold suiting you best, then stick with green and orange.
