Those who know me will tell you about how much resistance I put into trying out new trends; belt bags among them. I like to believe that I’m a classic sort of person and when I intend to invest in a trend; I make sure it is something that will last a while. Unfortunately I didn’t feel that way towards the belt bags; for quite a number of reasons! They’re too small; they emphasise certain body parts that I’m more comfortable hiding, and they feel like a trend that only the coolest people can pull off. Now that I’ve rattled off the negatives, I feel compelled to sing the praises of the belt bags as they’re clearly staying put for a while if the S/S 19 runways are anything to judge by.
So, needless to mention, going hands-free with a belt bag is the most practical way to go. Not only are they lightweight and very practical, you can also find them in all shapes, sizes and brands. BUT the question is… which belt bags are here to stay and which ones are on their way out?
Sadly, the consensus hints towards the ousting of the coveted Gucci belt bag that dominated this trend for past seasons with its leather and velvet iterations. Belt bags this year have gotten a makeover if you will, transforming them into the below shapes:
1 || Utility Belts
The utility trend is one of the biggest trends to take over 2019! Utility belts as introduced by Fendi among other designers during the S/S19 runway is one major way to incorporate this trend into your wardrobe! This new belt bag version is much smaller, detailed, very structured and incorporates at least one pocket. This bag doubles as a belt or a bag; so if you feel inclined to add another tote to your outfit then by all means do. Pair with cycling shorts and a mens-inspired shirt and you’re good to go.
These bags can be worn either as a belt or as a cross body strap with pockets; they can be dressed up or dressed down depending on how structured the bag is.
2 || Oversized Utlity
If you’ve invested in one of the Fendi logo mania belt bags fear not they’re still in, as they follow the utility trend. Gucci and Prada have also introduced roomier belt bags that are also utility-inspired. If you’re slightly confused as to which bags would fit the description; think roomier versions and less structure than the Gucci belt bag of previous seasons.
3 || Chained
Burberry introduced chained belt bags for S/S19. Structured leather belt bags on a double-wrapped chain are a fabulous take on the belt bag this season. Chic yet understated these creations work day or night but are on the slightly more dressed up end of the scale.
4 || Micro
Micro belt purses are also huge for 2019. They’re almost like a coin purse on a belt if you will. Nanushka have introduced a cute take on this trend with what looks like a backpack that is actually a front pack on chains. Take it up a notch and hang an actual coin purse to the straps of your jeans for the trendiest look; the below image is from Dior men’s 2019 collection but we are soo stealing it!!
