It’s that time of the year, it’s what we call ‘conflict’. You’ve got to look good, but there are plenty of ways to steer away from the healthy path. Lunches by the pool, cocktail receptions, you know the drill.
Not only that, summer has a way of making us question our food choices. Perhaps when the sun is out and nature’s bounty fills the streets with watermelon, fruit and vegetable stalls, health and wellness come top of mind. Well to help us along our journey we’ve identified 12 really great wellness accounts on IG (in no particular order). There are probably 1000s more, but these are the ones that piqued our interest. We’ve also included our local favorites, because let’s face it, they know us best!
Anthony William has an awful lot to offer. Check out his website, listen to his podcast, order a few books, Anthony has done it all. His work on celery juice in the recent past has turned the humble green vegetable into something of a superstar. As with everything, take what you need and what you appreciate, you don’t need to like everything he says, to benefit…
McKel Mooienga, has one of those picture-perfect accounts that makes healthy eating that much more enticing. Her bio claims the account makes it simple to apply the science of nutrition and practice the art of healthy living and we agree! Filled with healthy recipes and tips and tricks to live by, Nutrition Stripped is fun, easy and educational.
Local Favorite || Khadija’s Adventures
For Khadija Muheisin Dajani life is a series of adventures that she delves into wholeheartedly. As I have said one too many times, I had the pleasure of seeing this butterfly come out of her cocoon. A journalist by profession, Khadija is now a plant-based and whole-foods advocate with a number of certificates to prove it. She has also clocked a hefty number of yoga instruction hours, and probably just as many on running trails and lap pools alike. Khadija has put her writing skills to good use on her blog, you should probably subscribe. There are plenty of topics that she discusses, all under the flag of ‘making us better, so we can make the world better’. Khadija I hope I have done your IG account justice.
Amelia Freer is a nutritional therapist and author to 3 bestselling books. Her bio states, ‘healthy living in a delicious, balanced, informed, positive and practical way.’ Similar in style to Nutrition Stripped, Amelia guides us through wellness in a familiar way. Images of her picking apples, standing in the kitchen etc. Again, informative and easy to understand, Amelia puts a lot of information in her captions, so enjoy the photos but please read the text.
Mandy Teperson is a holistic wellness coach who follows Anthony William’s Medical Medium lifestyle, so there will be plenty of photos of celery stalks :). Perhaps one of the things that sets her apart are her really great quotes that allow many of us to identify with her and what she brings to the table. Her account is very hands on, less talk more lists. Heavy metal detox smoothie recipe anyone!?
Kelsey Voller was chronically ill for over 10 years, her journey of wellness is something she is passionate about. Her account is again, less talk and more lists that makes it simple and informative. On her Instagram story highlights there are short videos of her, talking to her audience which makes her that much more familiar. We’ve got to warn you, there is no way you are going to follow her without buying yourself a juicer and plenty of celery.
Local Favorite || ZeiNutritionist
When I first met Zein she was working for the UNHCR. Today she is a practicing nutritionist with a number of impressive certificates under her belt. She still gives back to the underprivileged however with her Cycling for Gaza annual initiative. I personally don’t ‘find’ Zein on my feed, I actually look her up. The FOMO is real!
Zein’s account is choc-a-block with deep explanations of common illnesses and unexplained chronic symptoms that we have gotten a little too used to…. She is extremely well-informed and I anticipate a change to her account soon… how about DoctorZee ?
I think the word ‘realistic’ fairly encapsulates this account. Megan Kelly is an holistic health counselor and nutritionist, this mom, wife, friend and dreamer tells it like it is. There is no faff, to get between you and your wellness. With quotes such as, “If you eat the Standard American Diet, and live the Standard American Lifestyle – don’t be surprised when you get Standard American diseases.” And yes, Arab and American diets and lifestyles don’t differ that much anymore…This account also delves into a little bit of self-help and ‘Save the Earth’ which makes it varied enough to enjoy everyday of the week.
Sarah Speckels is a WFPBNO chef… For those that are not familiar with the term, Whole Foods, plant-based, no oil (relax we just googled it)
To say that Sarah only has an Instagram account is to say that Arabic is only spoken one way. A quick tour through her impressive website and you will see that Pharmacy Revolution is a world of simple, elevated, unexpected, delicious cuisine. In her words she has redefined whole-food, plant-based cuisine, and she may well have. Thankfully her Instagram account is still user-friendly, no acronyms in sight 😉
We love these sorts of accounts and there are plenty of them. If you are the kind that needs to see to understand than this is the sort of account for you. Addressing weight loss, calorie counting and healthy alternatives in infographics style these sort of accounts are hugely popular and very effective. Did you know, when you eat just 3 carrots, they give you enough energy to walk 3 miles, and were first grown as a medicine not a food! See what we mean…
Local Favorite: Bassouma Abu Jaber Ghawi’s LifeStyleItB
Bassouma is the real deal.. who says you need to leave your culture and traditions for healthy food. Bassouma has beautifully reflected our culinary heritage on her Instagram page, which begs us to ponder whether our healthy change really needs to incorporate coconut water and goji berries… Her local recipes are brimming with goodness. Sourcing only the very best ingredients, fruits and vegetables, we would take Bassouma’s stuffed vine leaves over a chia seed / almond milk / celery / peanut butter / quinoa mess any day!
If the three above accounts are the Carrefours of this world, then Charlotte Queen is the Waitrose version, or perhaps even the supermarket section at Le Bon Marché in Paris. Super-sophisticated, so more palatable to the eye. Charlotte’s info is pretty much like the above only prettier, and isn’t that what Instagram is supposed to be…pretty…
