Phubbing || Why We Are All Guilty Of This Latest Epidemic

Prepare to be charged as guilty.. What is Phubbing? In case you were wondering or just missed out on the newly added term to the dictionaries while actually phubbing! CIIN introduces you to a new established act that has sadly proved to us we are all victims of technology!

Phubbing is a term coined as part of a campaign by Macquarie Dictionary to describe the habit of snubbing someone in favour of a mobile phone. In May 2012, the advertising agency behind the campaign, McCann, had invited a number of lexicographers, authors, and poets to coin a neologism to describe the behaviour. “Phubbing,” the act of snubbing someone with your phone.

How often while you were in the middle of telling a story have you fallen victim to a phone ringing or a person infront of you just picking up their phones in the middle of your chit chat and totally and completely steering their attention away from you? Well everyday.. Guess what? No one is innocent. We’re all guilty of phubbing. So here’s everything you need to know about the epidemic.

# Phubbing Ruins Relationships

According to a study , choosing your phone over your partner leads to lower marital satisfaction and more fights. Even just the presence of a phone during a conversation with your husband, wife, kids or even casual friends can make you appear less present. Why? Well, when someone’s attention is elsewhere, we feel unheard, unseen and unimportant.

# Phubbing Is Contagious

You’re not alone! As you’ve probably noticed, everybody is phubbing. That’s because it’s literally a vicious cycle. When you’re being ignored, you want to connect with something. So what do you do? You go to your phone. You connect with likes, hearts and emojis. Now everyone’s on their phone, and no one’s present.

# The Pledge To Stop Phubbing

We have to work on reconnecting the old and classical way.. Socially, emotionally presently.. Being more aware about how our phone use makes others feel, especially the people closest to you is vital.. Set a phones-off policy during dinner. Make eye contact, and don’t worry about that Instagram notification. The common denominator that has us all locked to our phones?
