What makes a Guru a Guru anyways? Is it their ability to share their compassion towards all humanity? Is it their strength in overcoming painful experiences from a place of peace and understanding? Or is it the authenticity they bring when they walk into a room? I don’t know about you but the traits I just listed sound a lot like the nature of a soul. We all have souls, don’t we? Which leads me to question this “Doesn’t that make us all Gurus?”
Throughout my years of practicing and implementing a variety of spiritual principles and studying with teachers and healers from all around the world; I came to the following realisation! All of us – without giving any importance to what we think about ourselves or others – we are all teachers in one way or another. We all serve the purpose of helping the people we encounter in our lives. Whether we come as a blessing or a lesson in people’s lives, the result will always lead to natural growth and self-transformation.
Which then leads me to highlight another set of questions …. yes, I am forever full of questions! The questions are as follows: why is it that a lot of us, if not most of us, have trouble trusting ourselves? Why do we always fear the choices we make and whether or not we’ve made the right ones? Why can’t we let go of the part of ourselves that wants to control everything and needs to know everything, instead of letting nature take its course? It all boils down to a simple yet very powerful answer…. we have drifted off and gotten disconnected from our own hearts. It is in our hearts where our truth lies, where our journey is engraved and where our soul speaks to us. To become your own Guru one must follow their inner compass, to work towards replacing fear with love. To seek answers to lasting fulfilment from a place of courage instead of doubt.
Becoming your own Guru is an ongoing journey that I, myself, will probably continue to work on as long as I’m breathing. You may be asking yourself why waste time on becoming your own guru and trusting yourself when there are so many external quick fixes the world has to offer? That is because no one else knows you better than you know yourself. It’s a matter of reconnecting with ourselves and asking what it is it that we really want? Easy…. right? Below are a few tips and exercises I’d like to share with you so you can awaken that magical inner compass of yours and let it continue to guide you to the best version of yourself.
So here go some practices that I have found useful in helping with realigning myself back to my heart.
Continuously ask yourself throughout the day “What is it that YOU want?” When we ask ourselves what we want we start to become more conscious of what our body, mind and soul are trying to tell us. This allows us to enhance our intuition and follow our gut feeling instead of shutting it down.
Next time a dear friend asks you how you’re doing? Don’t plaster your emotions with a standard response such as ‘I’m good’ Really tap into your emotions and be honest with yourself. For example “You know what …I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed today!” Replace judgment towards your emotions with acceptance. NO ONE HAS IT TOGETHER! When we are honest with ourselves and others, we can start attracting and building stronger relationships.
– Think of a person that you really look up to such as a family member, celebrity, or a teacher.
– Write down all the traits that you admire about that person.
– Next, strive to find those positive traits that you see in them within yourself.
We are all mirror reflections of each other, you hold the same traits that you see in others.
My favourite tip of all, take 5 or 10 minutes a day to really just sit with yourself in silence. Try to disconnect from the outside world and be present in the moment. Be aware of the environment around you, hear the noises that surround you, feel your lungs expanding as they naturally take their dose of oxygen. Turn down the volume on that disruptive loud voice in your head and raise up the volume of that quiet inner voice of yours. That inner voice is your heart speaking to you.
I hope these tips and tricks will assist you in gaining the most profound emotional support from the best Guru in the world and that Guru is YOU!
