Having an early morning ritual that you do day after day has become an essential aspect of your wellness routine, in fact it should become an integral part of your life. Some call it self-love hour, others call it their power hour or their magical hour it doesn’t really matter what name you call it, as long as you stick to it long enough to see the difference. To design your perfect morning routine you really must be attuned to your body’s biological rhythms because people operate on different levels and have varying productivity styles. While one person likes to start his day with a run, others might prefer a gentle yoga flow, and a third person might go for a run and then come back to meditate …. my husband being one. Even if you’re the type to want to start your day sipping your espresso in bed, there are certain things you must do in the early hours, journalling being one, to provide you with optimum mental, emotional and physiological benefits. Below are a number of the most popular practices that you will need to do in the morning, choose the ones that best resonate with you and your life and make it your own sacred ME time.
1 || Journal It
We can’t stress enough on the importance of journalling in the AM. Just put pen to paper and let your hands do the writing. Do not think too much about what you want to write, just allow whatever is in you to come out on paper. You are also encouraged to write down your dreams if you remember them, they’re the window to your subconscious mind. When the journalling habit clicks with you you’ll wonder how you ever survived without it.
2 || Intention & Gratitude
Two powerful practices that should be added to your journalling ritual are the setting of intentions, in addition to writing down three to five things you’re grateful for today. Setting intentions will allow you to dictate how your day will go and how you will feel throughout, while the gratitude habit allows abundance to flow to you unobstructed.
3 || Try The Wim Hof Method
This is an innovative exercise that reduces stress and boosts your productivity and performance, those who do it swear by it. If it’s a bit much for you try it on alternating days.
– Sit in a meditation pose as soon as you wake up.
– Inhale though your nose or mouth and exhale though your mouth in short strong bursts for 30 times.
– Hold your breath till you can’t anymore.
– Take in a long breath and hold it for 10 seconds.
– Repeat the process for three times.
– Finish it up with a cold shower.
4 || Read For 10 Minutes
Be it the book that’s on your nightstand, an article, some prayers or even some poetry. Set aside 5-10 minutes in your morning routine to catch up on your reading and to raise your intellect.
5 || Pray & Meditate
Did you really think that a perfect morning routine can be perfect without meditation and prayer? Meditation and prayers will help you improve clarity and focus, reduce stress and anxiety, connect with your divine forces, and start your day with a positive mindset.
6 || Listen To A Podcast or A TED Talk
This can actually be done while you’re getting dressed or even in the shower.
7 || Perform An Act Of Kindness
Call up a friend you haven’t seen in a while, give your extra banana to that homeless person, compliment the guy serving you coffee, or allow that driver into your lane. Random acts of kindness will make you feel so good and will provoke more acts of kindness in people.
8 || Have An Outlet For Your Creativity
Increase your dopamine levels in the AM by incorporating an outlet for you creativity, be it by using an adult coloring book, collecting pics or quotes for your vision board, or by doing any other hobby that you can dedicate a few minutes for each morning.
9 || Affirmations & Visualisation
Manifest everything you want in life by incorporating these two powerful exercises into your morning routine. Remember that your affirmations have to be written in the present tense, and your visualisation has to be as clear and descriptive as possible for it to achieve its purpose.
10 || Track Yesterday’s Finances
Keep your financial life in order by tracking your finances first thing in the morning when your mind is clearest. There are apps that can help you do that.
11 || Listen To Music
Compile a morning playlist and listen to it while you get ready in the morning. Make it themed depending on what you want to accomplish for your day. It can be upbeat or mellow, just make sure it resonates with you.
12 || Connect To Nature
Make it a point to connect to nature on daily basis. If going for a walk outdoors is out of the question then taking a couple of minutes to care for your indoor or outdoor plants is your next best thing. It is also extremely relaxing and rewarding; you can water your plant, wipe down the leaves, or trim it. It can be as simple as that.
13 || Cuddle
Take a few moments (six seconds at least) to cuddle with someone you love, be it your partner, your kid, your mom, or even your dog. Release valuable happy hormones in the AM.
14 || Exercise
But of course. Aim to fit in the exercise routine that can suit your days best. Be it a walk or run outdoors, a gym session, a yoga class or just 10 minutes of simple stretches and jumping jacks; exercise will minimise your anxiety and stress levels drastically. Raise your heart rate, release endorphins, and get the exercise part out of your way during the early morning.
15 || Consume Some Proteins
Aim to have some protein with your breakfast; 30-55 grams of it will help you feel fuller for longer, will stabilise your blood-sugar levels, and will give you a much-needed energetic start to your day.
16 || Review Your Life Goals
You should write down your life vision’s short-term and long-term goals. Take a few seconds every morning to review these goals to wire them into your brain and reframe your day within those goals. Reviewing your goals on daily basis brings you one step closer to manifesting them.
17 || Oil Pulling
This ancient ayurvedic practice is thought to help your burn more fat, balance blood sugar, remove bad breath and fight against Alzheimer’s. It involves swishing oil in your mouth for 10-20 minutes and then spitting it out. Coconut oil is recommended, and it should be done before brushing. If you decide to take up this practice keep in mind that oils can clog your pipes so you may want to spit it out on a tissue and throw it in the trash can.
18 || Tackle The Hard Stuff
Our ability to make the best decisions gets weaker as we move through our day. This is why you need to tackle any important work or life decisions first thing in the morning before your will power becomes weaker and depleted.
19 || Loosen Up With A Foam Roller
Despite it being amongst the stranger things to do in the AM, but those who committed to using a foam roller in the morning enjoyed their subsequent exercise sessions immensely. Foam rollers increase blood flow, reduce the probability of injury, improve our range of motion and help reduce the appearance of cellulite!!
20 || Learn A New Thing
Make it a habit to learn one to three new things everyday to make space in your life for continual learning. Be it by watching a YouTube video or memorising a new word.
