Your Ultimate Guide To A Hair Detox

Even if you got everything right, your hair can actually make or break your look. If you have experienced a bad hair day, you know exactly what I am talking about here. And you can’t get those great locks without taking extra care of them. Like your skin, your hair goes through many things every day. If it is not being affected by the sun, weather, pollution, or styling tools, it collects build-ups from the treatments, serums, conditioners, and shampoos you use.

A dead skin layer, dirt, and clogged pores can prevent your skin from getting the full benefits of the products you use. The same goes for your hair, the build-ups on the scalp create a layer that prevents your products from going totally in. This explains the dull, thin, and fuzzy strands we all hate.

In the previous article, We have agreed on the importance of skin detox to removing dead cells for a clearer and more glowy skin, and your scalp is skin too, so it needs a detox every now and then to keep your hair look shiny and healthy. A hair detox can help to stimulate hair follicles allowing for hair growth, it can also cleanse your scalp from dandruff, acne, and any other hair problem.

1 || Exfoliate Your Scalp

Yes, exfoliating your scalp is actually a thing. The skin of your scalp is just like the skin on any other part of your body. Creating a full-fledged scalp routine is a must and will guarantee healthier hair while reducing any mishaps along the way. Maintaining a clean scalp is going to help the hair we have now, it’s going to help the hair grow thicker and fuller. It will also make your scalp absorb the products you apply more effectively. You can make your own scalp scrub or buy one. If you decided to buy a ready one, look for key ingredients like zinc and copper.  Zinc is a great ingredient for scalp cleansing, it is in fact present in so many dandruff products. Copper, magnesium, organic essential oils, and keratin all help hair grow healthier and stronger.

2 || Natural Detox

The most important step in any detox plan is “cleansing”. And the hair detox is nothing different. You can easily cleanse your scalp by making your own natural cleanser using ingredients such as apple cider vinegar, Bentonite clay powder, and aloe vera gel. Combine 1/2 cup each of bentonite clay powder, apple cider vinegar, and aloe vera gel. Spread generously throughout the hair, applying on the scalp as well. Place a shower cap on and sit for 20 to 30 minutes. Don’t let the mixture dry out. Rinse your hair with 1 cup of white vinegar and allow it to sit for at least 1 to 3 minutes, then use a clarifying shampoo. Follow with shine boost rinse or detox hair soak immediately after.

3 || Switch Your Hair Products

It is all about the products you use. If you are hoping for a great looking hair then you need to switch your products to more natural, light ones. Also, you should choose your hair products according to your hair type. Start with looking for a shampoo that has the word “aloe”, “toxin rid” or “detox”. You may want to invest in a clarifying shampoo. These kinda shampoos help to remove buildup from hard water minerals and styling residue. The good thing about them is that they won’t strip your hair from its natural moisture.

4 || Oil-based Scalp Massage

Oils are a great way to moisture your scalp and add that beautiful shine to your hair. Choose an oil based on your needs, dilute it as needed, then massage it deeply onto your scalp for 15 minutes. wrap your hair with a hair cap and sit in the sun to let it soak. Then rinse with a light shampoo without water at first.

5 || In-Salon Treatments

If you are in for a more luxurious option you can go for an in-salon detox. Most salons will steam the scalp to help loosen buildup, then they’ll scrub your entire scalp and end the process with a scalp-focused shampoo and conditioner.

6 || Give Your Hair A Break

After all the effort you made to fix your damaged hair you may need to give it a break from dyes, chemicals, heat, and processing. Let your hair breathe. If you can’t do that, make sure you give it extra care by using deep conditioning treatments once to twice a week. If you need to heat your hair, use a thermal treatment with silicone ingredients.

7 || Prevent Future Buildup

Your hair now is healthier and more refreshed, and this result won’t stay the same if you don’t put an effort to maintain it. Prevent future buildup and environmental damage by using the right shampoo and conditioner in the shower, then spritz your hair with a leave-in hair product to shield it against environmental damage.
