Summer is all about great shoulders and beautiful necklines, which makes jewelry particularly important. Add to that your likely golden bronze color and how fantastic your gold pieces look against it. If you have been fiddling in your jewelry box for a couple of weeks now, its likely that you are looking for something new to adorn your ears. Over the past few years the neck has taken pride of place when it comes to jewelry trends. We’ve got the chunky link necklaces, the heart and circular pendants and the list goes on. All the while we have been dotting our ears with teeny tiny earrings, cuffs and loops that look great when ‘curated’. Let’s just say that the likes of Maria Tash have made a financial killing with this trend, as have the topical antibiotic pharmaceutical companies ;)). So many infected cartilage pierces!
Well things have finally taken a positive turn for ear accessories, with the introduction of a past trend, that of bold gold. Whether you opt for classic chunky hoops or a more abstract version, adorning your ear with something quite substantial has finally won the trend battle. Even jewelry brands that have for the longest time focused on delicate earrings have jumped on the bandwagon, adding bolder jewelry pieces to their collections. One of our favorite collections is perhaps Alexander McQueen’s newly launched Midas Touch collection. There is of course Bottega Veneta’s offering, after having featured a particularly chunky handbag strap, on their iconic cassette bag, it was only fitting to incorporate it into their accessories line.
If JLo-style hoops come to mind, then think again, this trend is more inspired by traditional African jewelry adornment styles, and less Jenny-from-the-block. These bold pieces come in a variety of hoop shapes, the heart-shape taking precedence so far. There aren’t any rules per sei as to how these hoops are styled, some opting for a single Big Bang, and others to a more eclectic collection.
Perhaps one of the greatest issues with perfectly round chunky gold hoops is the possibility of looking like Dumbo the Elephant. Case in point, Hailey Baldwin above. Your ear lobe is facing a 45 degree angle from your face, so if the earring ‘stick’ is facing the same direction of the hoop, it means that you will have your earrings sticking out at a 45 degree angle. With small hoops, this isn’t much of an issue, but it is for larger styles. When shopping for bold hoops, ensure that the stick is positioned differently so they can sit snugly against your jaw.
As for all those piercings, fear not, you can still incorporate them into the mix. In fact Dubai-based Lebanese blogger Dana Hourani makes a brilliant curation of both bold and delicate earrings together. We’ve pulled out for you our very favorite IG posts featuring bold earrings to get your inspirational juices going. Happy curation!
