90’s Grunge Dominated Fall’s 2019 Runways & We’ve Got The Scoop!

Christy Turlington

When Christy Turlington Burns came out of retirement to walk the Marc Jacobs’ autumn/winter 2019 show; it signified an officiating of the “return to the 90’s” phase that the fashion world is crushing over with fervour. The last time a catwalk saw Christy Turlington walk it was in 1993, when she walked for Marc Jacobs prior to retiring a year later at the tender age of 25. Going back to the 90’s has been a recurrent theme during the last few fashion seasons; and it wasn’t only about floor-grazing floral dresses and combat boots. Read below to find out which major 90’s trends are prevalent now and will dominate the coming seasons.

1 || Versace

The ultimate 90’s throwback was undoubtedly Versace’s Fall 2019 show in Milan last Friday; a giant safety pin sculpture was saying the least. Donatella Versace incorporated the house’s famous motifs such as the coins and the safety pins in modern takes of the bondage dress and the ripped jackets. Printed t-shirts were paired with skirts and lace tights, while sweaters were worn under slip dresses, not forgetting their iconic Versace print everything.

2 || Skirt-Suits

Skirt-suiting is the working woman’s wardrobe staple to take over throughout the coming seasons. Boss introduced many versatile pieces that could work for day or night such as navy tailoring, and one-tone dressing. Carolina Herrera went with a more feminine scheme by combining oversized blazers with bight floral skirts.

3 || Camel

The much-beloved camel coat is still reigning supreme. All lengths are in. Pair it with an all-neutral palette or with neon-colored separates for a streetstyle dose that is so on trend.

4 || Floor-Grazing Dresses

Long dresses…and skirts are no longer just these floral grungy numbers. Think slinky dresses and relaxed tailoring.

5 || Board Shorts

Surfing board shorts in lace or leather were seen all over Coach 1941 runway. Mixed with printed sweatshirts, fringed leather jackets or a faux-fur gilet will result in the ultimate grungy rock n’ roll look.

6 || Fur Gilet

I would probably think that the ultimate 90’s throwback is the word ‘gilet’; the last time I spoke this word was perhaps two decades ago. Pair your fur gilet with board shorts in leather or lace, or with contrasting plaid shorts and combat boots.

7 || Floral

Floral was still quite evident on the runways whether in the form of floor-length dresses or skirts, or in the form of 80’s/90’s billowing sleeves and big florals, such as the ones that walked down Zimmerman’s runway.

8 || Neon

Another trend that has seen a recent resurgence is the neon trend, and it doesn’t show any signs of abating just yet. Think slip slinky dresses or combine with neutrals or black.
