As is the circle of life, there is the circle of fashion. And for things to become on trend, it means some others need to fall off the fashion wagon. Don’t give these pieces away though, they will eventually return, gently nudging another trend off the radar.
The Cargo Jacket
The good old fashion khaki cargo jacket should be put in storage for this season at least. In its place the reliable trench coat in every single iteration you could imagine. Another trend that seems to have taken over is the vegan leather bomber jacket as well, to fill the mighty shoes of our favorite cargo jacket.
The Boyfriend or Girlfriend Jeans
Basically your jeans need to be cut like trousers this season. They don’t need to.. but they should if you want your silhouette to be on trend. Because like I’ve said on a number of occasions, its all about the silhouette. You can opt for wide leg jeans, a high-waisted jean with darts at the waist and a tapered leg, and lastly an old-fashioned straight leg jean, slightly cropped, mimicking Levis of the past.
The Basic Blouse
Well if you are going to wear a blouse this year its got to be big, bold and beautiful. Whether you’re taking it back to the pussy bow blouses of the Dynasty era, or the one shoulder, poufy sleeve versions from the nineties that’s the way to go which means that a basic blouse just won’t do.
The Faux Fur Jacket
Unless its sherpa of course! There are very few fur coats, fake or otherwise on the market. In their place some great vegan leather pieces, and of course shearling and its fake version sherpa. There are of course teddy coats as well, from last season.
OK, just to clarify, the wide-legged crop pant from season’s past is the culotte I am referring to as storage. In its place the shorter culotte, that is more similar to a below the knee or midi skirt, most often worn with knee high boots. This is a trend that originated as the bike short then kept getting longer and looser till it started making sense!
Again don’t get us wrong, if you own a fabulous piece by Etro or Alanui then you are on trend girl. Beautifully luxurious boho pieces made of cashmere, velvets and some pretty incredible appliqué work are all on trend. It’s the local exhibitions variety that need to be given a rest… no offense meant.
Skinny and Cigarette Pants
Relax…they will always be around, just in a different way. In the place of the reliable stretchy winter pant that works with all your baggy sweaters and long coats, we’ve got the slit pant. Still narrow in the leg, this pant has a 12cm slit either at the center bottom of the pant or the side. This allows the pant to fall comfortably over your high heeled shoes, creating quite a fabulous silhouette, and adding a good 5 cm in length to your legs.
Tweeds, be it pants or jackets, have had their moment on the runway, but this season you can comfortably put them away. In their place, some great snakeskin and shiny faux leather pants in either black, creme, camel or terra-cotta.
