Thirteen years ago Anya Hindmarch released the ‘I’m Not A Plastic Bag’ collection, at the price point of $ 6.5 and it immediately sold out.. Rooting from the same cause; the war against plastic, Hindmarch strikes again.. This time around the carbon-neutral ’I Am A Plastic Bag’ tote was released, created from recycled plastic bottles and coated with recycled plastic windshields.
Meanwhile, Hindmarch closed her London stores for three days after her team had collected 90,000 plastic bottles from local communities and filled her store fronts creating some sort of an awareness display.. Why 90,000? It is the number of plastic bottles purchased worldwide every 6 seconds..
Each bag is made from 32 recycled 500ml PET bottles. It was made in Italy, however, the fabric was developed in Taiwan, previously called ‘Garbage Island’, Taiwan now is probably the leading country technologically for creating recycled products efficiently..
This is an act of real craftsmanship,” says Hindmarch. “When you see them process the bottles – cleaning, emptying, shredding and making them into yarn – it’s fascinating. Like watching amazing embroidery.
The full collection will be launched this April, as for now, the bags available are crafted from recycled plastic, with a sustainable-leather trim and handles. Clementine and charcoal are the available colors.
