Italian fashion house Valentino has debuted their first collaboration and spin on the comfy trusted Birkenstock at the Men’s 2019 runway show during Paris Fashion Week, styled with black socks and snazzy tailored suits of course. Valentino’s Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli interprets the Birkenstock as “Adaptable and free. Modern and elegant.”
The two unisex models are now available to shop starting at $460. Piccioli has reimagined Birkenstock’s signature ‘Arizona’ sandal, one in a semi-matte black boasting a white ‘VLTN’ logo across the side, and the other in bright red and tonal buckles.
This is not the German footwear brand’s first high fashion collaboration, they have also worked with Rick Owens, French concept store Colette and most recently, the hip and relevant 032c Apparel.
The ‘ugly’ shoe generally is really having a moment, dominating both streets and runways, with Balenciaga, Christopher Kane and Vetements collaborating with Crocs, and Vivienne Westwood having just announced a collection with Buffalo. The trend dates back to Céline’s fur-lined ‘orthopaedic’ Birkenstock-style sandals at the Spring ’13 show.
You can now shop the collection at Valentino boutiques worldwide, select Birkenstock stores and online.
