1 || Lady Gaga’s entrance
Gaga arrived in a billowing Brandon Maxwell pink gown but quickly stripped down to a black dress underneath, another pink slip under that before finally revealing her final lingerie and glitzy fishnets look. Each look was paired with fitting accessories including her matching giant hot pink bow, black umbrella, oversized black cell phone bag by Judith Leiber and hot pink wagon replete with rosé and pink cowboy hats?! Four live outfit changes turned performance art on the red carpet in true ostentatious camp style, “artifice and exaggeration” done right. The Oscar-winning singer-actress was accompanied by an entourage of umbrella holding men guiding her cascading train and led by Brandon Maxwell himself. Gaga was dripping in $2 million worth of Tiffany diamonds including an 18k gold necklace.
2 || Billy Porter’s Grand Entrance
Porter came as a pharaoh, bejewelled and bedecked in gold of course. An entry in true camp fashion as the Pose series star was carried in on an Egyptian thrown on the shoulders of six shirtless men. Billy later revealed his golden catsuit’s 10-foot golden wings, matching his 24-karat gold headpiece and custom gold-leaf Giuseppe Zanotti shoes. The whole concept was similar to Lady Gaga’s 2011 Grammys red carpet entrance, where she was carried in on a wooden raft incubating inside of an egg, though the inspiration probably plays even more into the camp theme’s traits of pastiche and imitation.
3 || Zendaya’s Literal Cinderella Moment
Zendaya was transformed into Cinderella by her stylist-turned-fairy godmother Law Roach as her Hilfiger dress turned from a crystal gray to an electric blue after a wave of a wand. She even left behind her glass slipper, fully committing to the Disney princess theme.
4 || Real Life Barbie Doll aka Kasey Musgraves
Grammy winning country star Kasey Musgraves became Barbie for the evening in a hot pink Jeremy Scott leather gown and thigh-high slit, matching shades and blowdryer purse and platinum blonde wig. The artist even pulled up in a matching pink Corvette convertible.
5 || Jared Leto Carried His Own Severed Head
Leto recreated Gucci’s Milan Fashion Week runway moment where models carried replica’s of their own decapitated heads. Jared’s head clutch completed his blood red diamond encrusted silk gown.
6 || Kim Kardashian’s Mugler Drip
Kim turned heads in a nude wet-looking skin tight Thierry Mugler dress covered in beads and sequins. A troupe l’oeil look courtesy of the raindrop rocks intended to “deceive the eye”.
7 || Ezra Miller’s Dizzying 7 Eyes
A trippy makeup masterpiece by artist Mimi Choi. Miller wore a pinstriped suit & train and paired the look with a bedazzled bodice and carried a theatrical mask of his own face.
8 || Lena Dunham and Jemima Kirke Twin Fetish Looks
Dunham and Kirke poke fun at the theme in Christopher Kane, sporting bow-trimmed diamante studded designs, coordinating PVC crystal bags, latex gloves and a black rubber swim cap fastened below the chin.
9 || Katy Perry Wears A Chandelier
Perry is literally lit at the Met Gala. Known for her sartorial spectacles, the star stepped out in a giant crystal chandelier by Moschino’s Jeremy Scott, who shared “Who has ever been to a ball that did not have a chandelier?! The idea of elegance itself is quite camp and I wanted to play with that concept, poke a lil fun at it with a loving nudge.” Scott told Vogue “There is a built-in corset consisting of 18 steel bones and two hidden battery packs to illuminate the lights, I mean who wants to wear a chandelier that doesn’t light up!” The get up weighed a whopping 40 pounds.
10 || Cardi B
Cardi B outdid herself in a Thom Browne down-filled oxblood red gown embellished with real rubies. Despite its full coverage and seeming modesty, the dress exhibits a heart-shaped cutout on the derrière and 44-carat ruby nipples amongst other artistic innuendos. Cardi really brought the Red to the Carpet.
“The hallmark of camp is the spirit of extravagance. Camp is a woman walking around in a dress made of three million feathers.” —Susan Sontag
