And whether or not Anna Wintour is actually leaving!!
American Vogue’s highly anticipated September issue is out, and not a moment too soon, with Beyoncé’s cover only fanning the flames of Anna Wintour’s rumored departure. At the helm of American Vogue since 1988, this is Wintour’s 30th September issue. What sets this edition apart of course is the creative control given to Beyoncé, who frontS the issue, questioning whether or not this was in a way… Anna letting go a little.
The songstress who stars on the blockbuster cover for the fourth time, was given full editorial control of the feature including the text. In Wintour’s words,
who is better to write about Beyoncé than Beyoncé?
Another first for the issue is the choice of photographer, 23 year old up-and-coming photographer Tyler Mitchell is the first black photographer to shoot the cover photo in Vogue’s 126 year history. There has been much back and forth as to who chose him in the first place. Vogue in a statement stressed that they suggested names, Tyler being one of them, which Beyoncé then approved.
With the recent sexual abuse accusations posed to some of Vogue’s finest photographers, namely Bruce Weber, Mario TestinO and Patrick Demarchalier it is only reasonable to assume that new photographers would need to be considered. In a statement Vogue highlighted the fact that their August issue also included a variety of new talent.
Oh we all love a good rumor, but the truth of the matter is Anna Wintour ‘ain’t going nowhere’. What is happening however is a role reversal with celebrities garnering more creative power than the publication itself. There have been many covers by popular celebrities, but none as creatively influential as Queen Bey. Not only have her and her husband created a musical empire, but a creative one as well. It only makes sense to leave Beyonce to her own devices, perhaps most importantly to preserve the integrity and authenticity of the feature. Yes we know, you need a copy of it, ‘like now!’. Till then, have a look at all the photos!
