The first Monday in May traditionally marks the most prestigious fashion event of the year! The MET Gala this year is taking place on May 7th, an evening that brings together the biggest names in entertainment, fashion and politics for one night in New York.. Stay tuned to this year’s gala, and here are a few things that you need to know before the event tomorrow…
What Is The MET Gala?
Celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit informally called the Met Gala or the Met Ball, is a black-tie fundraiser for the museum’s Costume Institute, with last year’s gala raising over $12 million for the Met. The event also celebrates the opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit.
It’s an invite only event helmed by Anna Wintour, The Costume Institute is housed in the museum’s Anna Wintour Costume Center, named after the Vogue editor-in-chief. Wintour has served as the Met Gala co-chair nearly every year since 1995.
Where Is The Met Gala Taking Place?
Like its name suggests, the Met Gala takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, otherwise known as the Met. The event usually takes place at the outside of the venue, which becomes closed off to the public and is transformed entirely, with celebrities gracing the the carpet donning the annually themed outfits..
Which brings us to this year’s theme…
This Year’s Theme
The Met Gala gets its sartorial theme from The Costume Institute’s spring 2018 exhibition, this year it will be “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” exploring the intersections of fashion with the practices and traditions of Catholicism. The exhibit, which will feature 40 pieces on loan from the Vatican in the form of papal robes and accessories will feature more designs from names including Coco Chanel, John Galliano, and Cristóbal Balenciaga. Having adopted the holy theme, and as far as celebrity fashions go, the suggested dress code for the event is “Sunday best’.
The Star-Studded Guest List
Exclusivity defines the Met Gala’s guest list, with an estimated 550 attendees. Anna Wintour has the final say over who attends the Met Gala. Celebrities from A-list entertainers to political figures are to mingle together at the event. This year our eyes are hoping to witness 2 famous names who skipped last year’s gala, Beyoncé and Kanye West. The stars who attended the 2017 gala included Selena Gomez, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Priyanka Chopra, Katy Perry, Chrissy Teigen and John Legend, Madonna and hundreds more.
Met Gala 2018 Hosts
This year’s honorary hosts -alongside Anna Wintour- are Donatella Versace, Amal Clooney and Rihanna… Previous hosts included Idris Elba, Taylor Swift, Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady. Speculations are that Rihanna will be the IT celebrity at tomorrow’s event, having been promoted to co-host status, we predict that her outfit will rise to mark the occasion.
Who Is The One Celebrity Banned From This Year’s Met Gala?
On an episode of The Late Late Show with James Corden, Corden asked Wintour whose name, out of all her previous guests, would not be on this years clipboard. Her answer? Donald Trump. The Trump family has attended the famous event many times over the decades. The president began attending in the mid-80s, accompanied by his then-wife Ivana Trump. In 1998, he attended with his date Andrea Murray, and then took Melania and Ivanka Trump in 2004.
