Scandi-fashion has become a term synonymous with avant-guarde, fashion-forward style that is deemed both eclectic and eccentric. Modern minimalism that somehow manages to merge into exaggerated twists is a trademark of Scandi-style. Famous Scandinavian brands such as Ganni, Stine Goya, Cecilie Bahnsen, and By Malene Birger have become fashion forces in their own right. It is believed that Scandinavian fashion has embraced their mostly-winter climate and accordingly adjusted their styles to uplift their moods and not sacrifice their style to the cold. Each Scandinavian country has its own unique aesthetic; Stockholm has already brought us some of my own personal favourites such as H&M, & Other Stories, and COS, while Ganni, Saks Potts, and Cecilie Bahnsen continue to trail-blaze their way all over the world out of Copenhagen. Oslo is known for its über-quirky street style. Here below are the latest Scandi offerings that you should become acquainted with.
When Crown Princess Mary of Denmark presented Emilie Helmstedt with the prestigious Magasin du Nord Fashion Prize, this solidified the status of this creative genius with her whimsical designs and breathtaking colors and prints. All prints are painted by hand in their Copenhagen ateliers. Their effortlessly fun designs are made to allow the wearer to dream right into their waking hours.
OpéraSPORT was just launched in November 2019 by Awa Stelter and Stephanie Gundelach who had previously worked as a stylist while Stelter was a designer for Zara and Massimo Dutti. They set out to combat the waste produced by shows by designing limited editions rather than seasons. Their sustainable brand is made using recycled silk, cotton, and plastic. Kim Kardashian West already wore one of their rib tees back in December.
Not as new as the other brands featured; Rodebjer is a Swedish brand that was founded in 1999 by Carin Rodebjer. The brand has grown steadily and is now available in over 20 countries. Their aim is to “enhance personalities yet simplify everyday clothing decisions” by offering timeless versatile items that meet all needs of the modern woman. You can find slouchy suits, draped caftans, and easy-to-wear dresses, pants, and tops.
Perfect for the minimalists out there, this Scandi brand was founded in 2018 by Danish-Korean designers Kyeongmin Kim and Seyoung Hong. Using traditional Korean and Japanese pattern-cutting techniques, this brand offers easy-wear items in technical fabrics only as limited-edition capsule collections each season.
You are probably more aware of Rotate by the same brand but Birger Christensen has been among the leading fashion Copenhagen brands for over 150 years. A family-owned business that used to be among the first boutiques to stock Chanel and Celine, the brand expanded over the years and their latest offering is Remain which was launched in 2018. Their focus is to introduce timeless and practical clothing items that range between $100 and $1000.
