Grace Coddington Comes Up Roses With Debut Fragrance

Grace Coddington has always had a thing for rose-based scents.

The former creative director of American Vogue magazine has turned her skills to perfume creating, coming up with a collaboration with Comme des Garcons.

When it came to choosing base notes for the new fragrance, the 74-year-old knew exactly what she wanted it to smell like.

My mother had a rose garden, and it just never occurred to me to smell like any other smell except rose,” she laughed to

The resulting scent is a mixture of Moroccan rose, white musk and peach blossom, and has already been getting a good response from ex-model Grace’s friends and family.

People have been going out of their way to say, ‘Oh, that s the most wonderful smell. What are you wearing?” she said. “That’s a good sign!

Another important factor of creating a scent for Grace was that it shouldn’t be overpowering. Her first eau de toilette was Floris Red Rose – a classic fragrance that she purchased in 1959 with the money she made from winning a Vogue modelling contest at the time.

“With the money I made I went to all the old arcades with all the old shops, because I loved old, traditional things – I will, always – and Floris was one of those stores,” she said. “I didn’t go in with the intention of buying a perfume. I went in because I was responding to the visuals as much as a fragrance I found there called Red Rose. I just loved the idea that it was pretty much crushed rose petals and that was that.”

Since then, Grace has experimented with other fragrances such as the original Calvin Klein scent, Chanel No. 19 and Hermes Rose Ikebana Hermessence Perfume.

However her new signature scent is now the one she personally created.

When I do wear perfume, I splash it all over – that’s why it can’t be too strong,” she added.
