Human connection is a powerful thing, as we start the new year with hopes and aspirations, an inspiring story from the lips of a person is worth a couple of books on the topic. Lebanese born Dina Khalife’s story of passion for fashion, perseverance and triumph is just that.
When Madrid based Dina Khalife left the security of her full time job to start her own business in 2011, we were probably busy downloading three apps at a time on our iPhones. Meanwhile Dina was drawings with colored pencils, her passion was hand drawing. The concept was to create a line of colorful textiles and turn them into beautiful pieces to wear. To portray beauty and magic in ordinary things.
How does one hold onto a dream when everything around you is beating to a different drum? 2011 was an angry year, the start of the Arab Spring, and Europe in financial turmoil, Dina’s dream must have seemed even more unattainable. Her intuition and perhaps the look of sheer joy in the eyes of her earliest clients was inspiration to pursue her dream.
It takes a lot of courage to leave your full time job and and start your own project. Its full of ups and downs and when I feel everything is not working anymore, I like to think it might seem impossible but there’s always hope
4 years later and people are flocking to her for a little piece of her world. Our ‘app’etite finally satiated, we are thirsty for a gentler more human life. Everywhere we look today people are drawing inspiration from simplicity, whether it is Dolce&Gabbana’s Spring ’16 collection or the adult coloring books that stockists can’t keep on their shelves.
Dina’s designs are by no means simple though. Making good use of the superior workmanship in Europe, the designer’s materials are all crafted by local artisans in Como, Italy. A city known for it’s finest printing techniques. The fabrics then make their way to Madrid, Spain where the final garments are produced.
A stylish fusion of elegant tailoring, flowing silk dresses and mouth-watering prints, Dina goes where few have ventured. A whimsical yet fashion forward collection that brings energy and optimism to the wearer, not just fashion attitude. Her drawings seem to draw us in, we relate to them, and after a while, we feel like we drew them ourselves.
This is the uniqueness of Dina Khalife, a synergy between her design and the person, that creates a magical energy. Like a perfume almost, these clothes don’t just sit on your skin, they seep in, and create a unique and personal attitude that few designers can compete on. Dina clearly has a winning formula, but then again she knew that all along…
