Meet Rowena Karmy || A Jordanian Model Lighting Up New York City

Rowena Karmy

Jordan boasts a lot of exported talents such as in design, fashion and music though we haven’t yet had much talent in modelling, up until now. We have had the lovely honour of interviewing Jordanian NYC-based model Rowena Karmy, signed to Click Model Management, Inc. Scroll for an inside scoop on how the stunning supermodel-in-the-making survives the tough and highly competitive industry in NYC

When asked where she thought the field of modelling was currently at in Jordan, Rowena expressed that local modelling has seen some great progress, though it still has a long way to go. “There are many talented people who sadly can’t shine [in Jordan] the way they would if they were in another country” she shared. There are very few modelling agencies in Jordan and this is a real shame, she tells us of how crucial it is for the industry to establish more agencies in Jordan in order to allow and encourage models to display their talents and gain recognition.

I do know for a fact though that when such talented people in Jordan come together, they create great things. These photographers, make-up artists, models and designers are working so hard to improve the field and I can feel it from here.

Regarding her personal goals as a model, Rowena tells us that she always has high hopes in her work, but at the same time she tries to stay grounded so that she can enjoy every moment of it. Her ultimate goal is to stay happy, healthy and inspire people to make positive life decisions, sharing “I love the growing community I have been communicating with through my work, and I feel like I have the chance to reach out to many more people. I want to continue to work with designers and brands across the US and abroad, and, who knows, maybe one day walk the Victoria’s Secret stage!”

As a model, Rowena’s main struggles so far in the industry have been maintaining her confidence day in and day out. She shares how important it is, as lack of confidence shows more than anything, “no one wants to hire someone who doesn’t believe in themselves”, she rightfully says. She has also had to deal with rejection the hard way, “Things go back and forth between you and your agent; you are either liked or not and sometimes put on ‘hold’ with high expectations only to be let down. It is so important to graciously keep your head up and believe that you will get the next one!” This is some sound advice for aspiring models hoping to make it big.

Moving onto how her general New York experience has been, Rowena tells us it’s been really fun and interesting, “I think I have grown a lot in this industry. I have been able to meet so many people with whom I have built strong relationships. The teams in the modelling industry are really fun and different every time! I get so excited every time I’m scheduled to model for a new client. I love to meet all the hair and make- up artists, photographers, people behind the scenes, and everyone else on the team. It’s just an exhilarating experience, especially when things are going well. There are ups and downs but looking back I have made some great strides in the industry and I can’t wait for more!”

If you’ve wondered how successful young models balance the dynamic nature of their work and school, Rowena assures us “I have no idea! Honestly, this is a struggle. I try my best to do both to the best of my abilities, but I sometimes have to miss some classes for important jobs/castings. I study interior design at the Fashion Institute of Technology and the school work is also pretty heavy, so it takes up a lot of time. I guess I just try to squeeze my time and I end up running around NYC a lot. It’s all worth it in the end!”

When asked what her most exciting job so far has been, she says one that stands out most was a job she did in Japan this past February, “I mean…I got to travel to Japan for it so it for sure is one of my favorites. I worked with the same team in NYC for the same product in Tokyo and they’re the sweetest people ever, we had so much fun together. I hope I’ll get to have similar experiences soon!”

Incase you didn’t already know, Rowena has also participated in Miss New York USA 2018 and landed 4th runner-up! We asked her what the main takeaway lessons from the beauty pageant experience were and she told us “I learned so much… for starters LOVE AND BELIEVE IN YOURSELF. Confidence is everything, in everything that you do. You have to believe in yourself so that other people will too, but always remember there is no “perfect” in this world. Second, I would say it taught me to spread kindness and support to the people around me. We were a group of dedicated, ambitious young women who were always there to support and encourage one another. I learned that I can use my platform to spread good in our community, and I want to lend a helping hand to everyone who can benefit from it.”

Finally, we asked if the young model thinks she’ll eventually settle back in Amman, though she shares “Sadly, I do not think that will happen as my family has moved to the US and my career, education and life are now here. At the same time, Amman has a place in my heart because of the beautiful moments I’ve spent there over many years. I will always call it home and visit it whenever I can. I still have friends and family there and some wonderful memories of the places we used to go. I would love to contribute to the growing modelling industry there!”
