3 Style Legends, 3 Very Different Views On The Future Of Fashion

Karl Lagerfeld

Karl Lagerfeld has a message for young designers: fashion is a race, so you better start running.

The famed designer was one of many style legends to discuss the future of fashion, which has come into question after the shock exits of Raf Simons at Christian Dior and the departure of Alber Elbaz from Lanvin.

“The thing that I hate most are designers who accept those very well-paid jobs and then think the demand is too strong, that they are afraid of burnout, etc,” Karl bluntly told WWD.

It’s a full-time job, not an occupation between others. Fashion is a sport now: you have to run.

Giorgio Armani

Karl, 82, has been in fashion since the ’50s and juggles his own label as well as being the head at both Chanel and Fendi. Fellow designer Giorgio Armani, 81, has been in the fashion game nearly as long, setting up his eponymous label more than 40 years ago. In his view, fashion should take time out every now and again. However with the demands of the modern world, this is near impossible.

Fashion has become one of the principal actors on the vast stage of communication and, as always happens in these cases, the same elements that decree its success can provoke its crisis,

“The feeling that there is too much of everything and that everything goes too quickly has long been clear to me. Technology and the current lifestyle lead to an increasingly stronger acceleration. Fashion also needs pauses, and sometimes silence, to be fully appreciated.”

Alber Elbaz

Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors and Alexander Wang also expressed their opinions. On Wednesday (28Oct15) it was reported Alber had quit his role at Lanvin after 14 years, and for his chat with WWD before the news broke, he tellingly talks of the challenges designers face.

The more I talk with people, I see everybody looking for a change, everybody,

There is not exhaustion but almost like a confusion of what we are and who we are in fashion.
