Kerry Washington’s role as a Brand Ambassador for Movado watches was as important as her role as Olivia Pope, if not more. It definitely lasted longer! Kerry Washington was Movado’s brand ambassador for ten whole years “We joke all the time that not a lot of marriages last 10 years, so we must be in love.” Kerry Washington comments as she discusses her relationship with the brand. A watch that is focussed on a unique modern-art aesthetic, Movado stood by Kerry Washington and watched her career grow from a small role on broadway to becoming Olivia Pope.
“Movado has never abandoned me. They’ve just aways been there, and it has allowed me to grow as an artist and to take different kinds of risks.” Kerry Washington said in an interview in 2016.
“I’m not interested in partnering with brands where I have to conform to match their brand identity.” Kerry Washington continues to explain. When asked about her choice as being a Movado ambassador, Washington explained that there is no real algorithm involved. She chose the brands that she felt an instant connection to, that she felt proud of, that gave her a deep-rooted sense of reward and achievement. When Kerry is involved in a partnership with a brand, she becomes extremely hands-on and very engaged and integrated in the relationship. And it seemed only a natural extension of such a relationship to take this partnership further into Scandal; a show that became a cultural force to be reckoned with in terms of fashion, language, gender equality and inclusivity. Funnily enough, Washington wore not one but two Movado watches on her wrist in the crossover episode between Scandal and “How To Get Away With Murder”.
Not only that but Kerry Washington took the relationship to the next level when she brought Movado on the set of her movie “Confirmation”; a period drama set in the 90’s. A vintage watch was needed, and Kerry looked no further than the Movado archives to secure her piece…aptly calling them her archives, which was reciprocated by Movado CEO …”She’s part of the company, she’s part of our family, and that’s just really rewarding to work with somebody like that.”
The Movado philosophy of excellence, dedicated Swiss craftsmanship, and a quest for technological innovation is as valid today as it was back in 1881, when Achille Ditesheim, a 19-year-old entrepreneurial watchmaker founded the company. A thoroughly modern watch since its inception, Movado’s minimal aesthetics was first used in the 1930s and remains to this day.
