She may be best known today as the girl that Justin Beiber is singing to in all his songs. Selena Gomez is, other than The Beib’s on-again-off-again girlfriend, developing an inimitable style thanks to the work of celebrity stylist Kate Young, who incidentally styles Oscar winner Alicia Vikander also.
Firstly, we love the fact that Kate Young took on board Selena Gomez’ past when developing her future style. The Disney character was all grown up now, and her clothing needed to reflect that maturity without it looking contrived.
Secondly, the easiest and fastest way to establish an identifiable style is to choose a color palette and stick with it. Kate intelligently opted for the glamorous, European red / white / black combination. Unless she is wearing metallics she is invariably in these colors and it works.
Thirdly, she doesn’t accessorize, whether or not this is a good thing is besides the point. What Kate was attempting to achieve was a clean, modern look. As far from Disney princesses as possible, where playing dress up is a must.
Fourthly, if you are trying to polish up your style, you need to act the part not just dress the part. Selena’s walk has changed, and so has her body language. She carries herself with poise and sophistication, an entirely different direction to say… Miley Cyrus!
