In an unprecedented move, Vogue changes tactic and places a female icon of empowerment on its May cover. To prove that beauty and brains do come together; Amal Clooney graces the cover of Vogue and talks candidly about family life, her marriage to George Clooney, and her career.
The mother of twins, and worldwide advocate of women’s rights, used Vogue as a platform to share her views on many pressing issues that she feels strongly about, such as gun control. Amal and George supported the March of Our Lives which pushes for tighter gun controls by participating in the march as well as donating half a million dollars for the cause. Amal also discussed the Me Too movement as she explained that nowadays the “predators feel less safe and a professional woman feels more safe..”
I think because of the brave women who have come forward to tell their stories, the future workplace will be safer for my daughter than it was for people of my generation.” Clooney said.
Having landed in the public eye after her engagement to George Clooney in 2014; Amal is no stranger to the hype however. Being one of London’s, and albeit, the world’s most notable barristers, Clooney handled such high profile cases as ISIS and Enron, as well as being Kofi Annan’s advisor for Syria. She does admit that it took a lot of hard work, creativity, and persistence to get to where she is today. “She’s the professional and I’m the amateur” says George of his wife as he gloats and jokes of the fact that some of the headlines ahead of their marriage read “Internationally Acclaimed Barrister Amal Alamuddin Marries An Actor”.
Being a role model for feminists worldwide, it is quite a milestone for Vogue and the culture in general when there is a deviation from the norms and glorifying the unexpected. Though we may not be international barristers or worldwide activists, or married to an Oscar winner for that matter, but it gives us immense pride to see Clooney gracing The Cover of all covers.
