When asked about the major nostalgic moments of my teenage years; watching ‘The Nanny’ probably ranks high up on that list! Though ‘The Nanny’ never could beat watching ‘Friends’, but I have to admit that Fran Drescher did manage to strike quite a figure back in her day. And she still does! The 63-year-old Fran Drescher returns to the small screen with her new NBC show ‘Indebted’; a sitcom that will tell the hilarious stories of a broke couple who crash with their son and daughter-in-law.
More than 20 years have passed since the airing of the last episode of ‘The Nanny’ in 1999, but Fran’s eccentric style and nasal voice (which had typecast her into mostly comedic roles) still live on in the memories of many. Drescher created the sitcom with her then-husband producer Peter Jacobson and it debuted on CBS in 1993 shooting Drescher towards immediate stardom. The beloved series is being turned into a Broadway musical, where six years’ worth of entertainment will be reduced into a two and a half hours of onstage fun. After the show ended Fran starred in two more shows which were short lived; ‘Living with Fran’ (2005-07), and ‘Happily Divorced’ (2011-13).
Drescher was diagnosed with uterine cancer in the early 2000s, and she will be cancer-free for 20 years this June. Fran made use of her recovery to turn her life into a whole lifestyle movement; she founded a nonprofit organisation ‘Cancer Schmancer’ that focused on helping low-income women with prevention and early detection of cancer as well as policy change. Drescher even lobbied to raise awareness of gynaecological cancers and worked as a U.S. diplomacy envoy for cancer detection in foreign countries. Drescher also wrote a few New York Times best-selling books, and she did some directing, writing, and producing. On a personal level, Fran practices Buddhism, goes to therapy and does a lot of self-refinement.
“Indebted’ premiered on February 6, and even though some would argue that this could be slightly reminiscent of ‘Everyone Loves Raymond’, but the creator of the show who was also behind ‘The Goldbergs’ was inspired by Fran and wanted a ‘Fran Drescher type’ for the mother Debbie. So why not have Fran herself try out for the role! We hope this will turn out into another ‘Nanny’ success!
