Different -God given- skin tones call for different nail polish choices.. Many a times you just love the nail color on your friend’s fingernails, only later to try it on your own hating the results so much.. The reason behind this lies in the beauty of diversity.. Although many of us match our nail polish colors to our outfit, the colors that actually look the best are the ones that suit our skin tone. Fair or dark skins factor in when choosing the best nail hue, enhancing your assets is always a smart thing to do!
The Tone Test…
First consider the tone of your skin, meaning the lightness or darkness level. Then look at the the warmth or the coolness. If you have an undertone of pink or red, nail colors with blues in them are more flattering for your complexion. If your undertone is more neutral, golden or olive, yellow-based shades with more warmth will look fantastic for you.
No idea what skin tone you have?
Simply look at the color of your arm in natural light – are the veins blue? You’re likely to have cool undertones. If they look more green, you’re probably warm. Once you’ve narrowed down your skin tone and undertones you can then determine which shades suit you best..
If you have…
The trick with pale skin tones are finding polish shades that compliment, rather than compete with or wash out your fair complexion. Pale skin tones are generally cool, so lighter shades with pink or blue undertones work best. Pastels can also look great. Choose blue-based pinks or reds to brighten up your skin. Navy is a fun option too.
Tanned skin looks better with warmer colors. Lighter shades such as warm, pale shades of brown, light blues, pinks and purples can really accentuate a golden glow.
Medium olive and Asian skin can carry off almost any nail polish shade, from classic red and dark burgundy, to intense vibrant blues, peachy pinks and orange. Silver and metallics look great on medium/olive skin tones, too. Deep grape shade look amazing as well..
High impact, pigmented hues should be your aim.. Dark complexions suit rich and deep shades the best. Burgundy, vibrant purples and plums that hold a darker berry tone look great, and you can also get away with fabulous neon brights. As for blues, embrace the brightest cobalt shades. When it comes to nudes, cream and beige nail polishes with sheer, jellylike formulas win again. Stay away from light, baby pinks.
