If you struggle with acne and acne scars, you are definitely not alone. It is really annoying and that’s why we are always in search of the best ways to deal with this chronic skin issue. Today we are not going to talk about professional or medical ways to deal with this problem, but rather about the best day-to-day skincare regimen to follow if your skin is acne-prone.
But before anything, we recommend you assess your current skincare routine and see if there is any product that contributes to breakouts. As some products do claim that they are good for blemishes while in fact, they make them worse. So consider removing anything that leads to excess oils on the skin, or occlusion of the pores and replace them with water-based products (including sun cream) instead.
Two heroes: Salicylic acid & retinoids. Salicylic acid reduces blackheads, pimples, unclogs pores, and prevents forming new breakouts on the skin. Although it is a great ingredient to add to your acne-fighting routine, we recommend you to be cautious when using as it might cause irritation on dry and sensitive skin types. That said, start with adding only two percent-strength salicylic acid into your evening skincare regime, after cleansing and before moisturizing.
Retinoids are another hero ingredient for fighting acne as they help balance excess oil production, reduce inflammation, reduce clogged pores, and even have antibacterial properties. To avoid irritation caused by the wrong use of retinoids, you should incorporate them into your routine with caution. Start with a small concentration, and use it once a week at night and after cleansing.
1 || Cleanse
Never skip washing your face in the morning! I know it might be tempting to do so, but what you may not know is that your skin pushes all dirt and toxins on the surface while repairing at night. So make sure to wash your face with a gentle cleanser that contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide for exfoliation and alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and sulfur for collagen promotion and excess oil reduction. You don’t have to use an acne-fighting face wash, as these are way harsher on the skin and can damage the protective barrier, which increase the chances of breaking out.
2 || Moisturize
This is not a step only for those who have dry skin… Moisturizing your oily and acne-prone skin is a must actually. If you don’t moisturize your skin, it will end up producing more sebum to compensate, leaving it more likely to breakout. Keep your skin hydrated with a lightweight and oil-free moisturizer that contains ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and/or ceramides. Go for lotion formula for dry skin, and a gel one for oily skin
3 || Wear SPF
SPF whenever possible. I mean acne or not, this step should be a must in your beauty routine now. You know those annoying scars that stay for weeks or months after you get a pimple? Sun exposure makes them worse… And this is the last thing we want, right? So make sure to apply sunscreen regularly and everyday of the year indoors and outdoors.
1 || Cleanse… again
Exactly as you feel like washing your hands of all the dirt, bacteria and pollutants after you get home, you need to wash your face. On top of all the dirt, you maybe are using makeup on your face, which makes washing it at nigh a must. Not matter how tired or sleepy you are, if you want a healthier and better-looking skin you need to “wash” your face… no, wipes Won’t do it! Use the same cleanser you used in the morning. If you are a makeup girl, then you may need a double cleansing product before washing your face.
2 || Use Acne Treatment
This means a serum with an active ingredient that will treat your acne. These includes: adapalene, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide and niacinmide. If your issue is blackheads and whiteheads go for adapalene or salicylic acid. Benzoyl peroxide or niacinmide may help if you are dealing with inflammatory acne.
You need to start slow with these treatments. With adapalene dab a small amount to a clean, dry skin twice a week for two weeks, then increase this to three times a week for three weeks. After that you can build up your tolerance to every other night or every night.
For the other treatments, you can apply daily morning or/and evening, but it is better to start using them every other night till you build up tolerance to them.
3 || Moisturize
Wait till serum get absorbed, then hydrate your skin with the same moisturizer you used in the morning. Keep it this simple, you don’t need a separate night cream. Mixing too many active ingredients won’t help with acne and may actually irritate your skin.
Don’t forget to address scarring.
