The Case Of Severely Chapped Lips || CIIN’s Lip Scripts

dry lips

Got flaky chapped lips? You’re not alone.

The case of the round-the-clock dry lips, has all sufferers stocking up almost every spot around with an arsenal of lip balms.. Personally, I have one form or another of lip treatments wherever I go. I in my pocket, car, office, bathroom, sitting room and of course, my nightstand. However, the curse of chapped lips has been long ongoing and severely annoying recently, to a point where all my efforts of sweeping on the best lip treatments out there was to no avail..

What are the main causes of chronically dry lips?

1 || The habit of licking your lips

Licking your lips only dries them out more. Because saliva evaporates quickly, your lips are drier after you lick them than they were before. While flavored lip balms may be fun, they can tempt you to lick on them, this leads to dry and cracked lips…

2 || Not wearing lip sunscreen

Yes, your lips can and will get sun-burnt had you not applied an SPF infused lip balm. Just like any other organ in your body!

3 || Dry and cold weather conditions

Because of their thin epidermis, cold air can and will dry your lips. Protecting the moisture barrier by applying a hydrating agent and securing a rather humid environment is needed to protect the lips..

4 || Poor lipstick quality

Unfortunately, many lipstick brands out there tend to steer their focus on the lip tint and consistency (matte, shiny, long-lasting) way more than the ingredients used in producing the lipstick. This can cause severe lip dryness.

5 || Not drinking enough water

Although I truly feel that our water intake has nothing to do with our skin condition in general, I believe that lips tend to be the weakest spot where moisture can easily evaporate resulting in a flaky, chapped state..

6 || Exfoliating overdose

When your lips are chapped, they can be rough and start to peel. Taking off skin that isn’t completely dead, however, can lead to bleeding and pain, so be careful. Over exfoliating will only make things worse. However yo can apply a gentle exfoliator like a sugar scrub with your finger. Be sure to follow with a good moisturizer.

7 || Infection

Chapped lips can get infected, as bacteria can enter through cracks and abrasions. This is known as cheilitis and must be treated by a doctor.

Note to self..

After becoming aware of the listed possible causes for dry lips, the fact that lips don’t have sebaceous glands (which produce sebum, skin’s natural moisturizer)  like the rest of our skin, lips have a weak barrier that we need to protect in order to maintain their moisture and volume.. Another fact about lips you might have never heard of before, is that lips have a small number of blood vessels, and while blood flows to the vital areas during exposure to the cold, our extremities are less well-supplied.

How to banish lip-crispiness??

1 || Know your ingredients

A good old-fashioned moisturizer goes without saying..Whether it’s in the form of a conditioner, balm or oil, there are key ingredients you need to look out for, such as almond, shea butter and coconut oil, as well as vitamin E and beeswax. Avoid ingredients in products such as face cleansers, creams and lipsticks which contain chemicals that can cause dryness and chapping..

2 || Mask Your Lips

Consistently applying lip masks allows the moisturising ingredients to work their way into the delicate lip skin. Look out for overnight lip masks which basically allow you to sleep your way to a pillow-soft pout.

3 || Apply SPF

Simple. Get an SPF-infused balm..

4 || Dig for Hyaluronic Acid

Other ingredients to look for in a lip treatment would be the trusted hyaluronic acid, in addition to peptides, ceramides, as well as faithful hydrators such as coconut oil. Those  promise plumper lips in a matter of days.
