Detoxing your beauty routine has become somewhat of an obsession with beauty addicts. If you have not yet caught on the frenzy, well now is a good time since the changing seasons can allow for slight changes in our beauty routines and this can easily justify the new purchases. When you detox your beauty items, it simply means that you’re going towards clean beauty items. What does clean beauty mean anyways? It simply means that the products are made without any “proven or suspected toxic ingredients”. Clean beauty products are simply made while keeping the health and the environment a priority. How can you start making the switch to clean beauty? Start simple and small and gradually expand to the rest of your beauty arsenal. Below are some of the clean beauty swaps that are a good place to start.
1 || Clean Deodorants
Perhaps this is the best place to start for the simple reason that the under arms are critical points in our bodies as they contain a concentration of lymph nodes and sweat glands that are always active. And it is no secret that conventional deodorants may contain a lot of toxins, possible carcinogens, and “endocrine disruptors” that can easily enter our bodies through one of the most important channels; the endocrine system. And since the underarms are always getting exfoliated by shaving or waxing; thus their absorption rate is high. Another important point to be aware of is that there are many other unlisted toxins that could be hidden under the term “fragrance”. So beware!
2 || Clean Sunscreen
The most important skincare item in your beauty arsenal can also be the most irritating! Sunblock is considered the most important anti-aging item to use, therefore you should make sure that your sunblock does not include any chemicals since these chemicals degrade in sunlight and you will lose your level of protection. Aim to use mineral sunblocks as not only will they calm your skin, they will protect it until you wash or sweat them off. The claim that they take longer to rub in is now virtually expired as most clean beauty companies have developed clean formulas that are lightweight and easy to blend in.
3 || Clean Mascara
When you really understand the components of a conventional mascara, you would be horrified that that even comes near your eyes! Mascaras are usually made with coal tar, they may also include “synthetic preservatives and plasticisers”. Clean beauty brands such as Juice Beauty are now making clean mascaras that work as well as the conventional ones using “high-tech innovations and powerful botanical ingredients”. Apply more than one coat to achieve a wide-awake look!
4 || Clean Shampoo and Conditioner
Another sensitive area to benefit from clean products is the scalp area of course. Regular shampoos and conditioners are loaded with powerful fragrances, sulfates, preservatives, and possible carcinogenic plasticisers and dyes. And keep in mind that you are not only using these toxins on your head and body, you are also inhaling them through the shower steam so think about that!! Clean shampoos on the other hand don’t use industrial sulphates and detergents, and clean conditioners use natural oils and butters to soften and moisturise.
5 || Clean Self-Tanner
For the same reasons as above, aim to use clean self tanners because conventional types are full of parabens, phthalates, and powerful fragrances to mask the unpleasant smell of DHA (the nontoxic additive that colors the skin).
6 || Clean Lipstick
Now you’re probably going to say enough already 🙂 But think again. Since we probably eat a large percentage of what we put on our lips, I don’t have to elaborate do I?? Conventional lipsticks are full of dyes (and not even the food kind), petroleum, plasticisers, alongside the usual suspects such as endocrine-disrupting and carcinogenic preservatives, as well as fragrance. Fortunately, some clean beauty companies such as Kosås are bestowing us with gorgeous long-wear items.
7 || Clean Face Serum
Serums are designed to be one of the most effective skincare steps, yet they are almost always full of ingredients that make them work well (on the surface) yet do nothing for our skin. Look for serums that use active organic botanicals and essential oils.
8 || Clean Perfume
I think you’ve learnt your lesson by now. Switching to clean fragrance will protect your skin as well your nasal and sinus passageways and your lungs from exposure to all those unwanted toxins. And again, it seems the word “fragrance” can be loaded with hidden ingredients.
