When I first started working at CIIN some sixteen months ago, the term Korean beauty was exactly that….Korean! With the help of our Beauty Editor Yasmeen and after a whole lot of research, I came to greatly respect the Korean skincare and beauty routines. I embraced them with an open mind and a lot of experimentation. Today when I came across another K-beauty ingredient, I couldn’t help but investigate and share my findings. Cica is not a new term, in fact it’s been around for ages and it has been a staple in Chinese medicine for centuries. Cica is the ingredient responsible for calming down the skin’s natural redness and basically color-correcting the skin. But it’s not just about that! To learn more about cica keep scrolling ….
What Is Cica?
Centella asiatica, or cica, is also referred to as gotu kola, Indian Pennywort, or tiger grass. Sound familiar now I suppose!! Cica is an Asian plant that has been used for centuries for the treatment of wounds, incisions and burns. Tigers used to rub their wounds with it to heal themselves; hence the name ’tiger grass’. Cica’s composition is key for its healing properties; it is full of amino and fatty acids, beta-carotene, vitamins C, A, B1 & B2, and antioxidants.
The Importance of Cica
Due to the high levels of pollution in Korea, sensitive inflamed skin is a widespread skin concern amongst Koreans. Cica is thus very popular and it is a major component of most skincare products taking on the job of calming inflammation, irritation and redness.
