If you’re a makeup fanatic and you’re over 40 then you should definitely read this! With all the anti-aging products and tips out there you would think that the beauty industry would pay attention to makeup as well. But if you’re over 40 you are going to need to do your own digging for information…..as most of us fail to replace the makeup tips we learnt in our 20’s and 30’s. As women over 40 begin to embrace a face that is slightly less plump and is starting to show for its experiences, it is crucial to work with and not against nature …so read below for some do’s and don’ts for applying makeup to maturing skin.
1 || Blush
To work against the pull of gravity, blush should be applied to the upper part of the cheekbones going slightly upward.
2 || Eyebrows
Sparse eyebrows are the fastest way to show your age. Work on filling in your eyebrows and pay close attention to ‘tails’ or the tapered ends of your brows.
3 || Eyelids
Our eyelids start changing as we age and this could happen as early as our early to mid-thirties. Open up your eyes by using lighter shades of eye shadow and nude shades closer to the brows. When applying the eyeshadow shades of the moment, dab them in a circular motion on the crease going slightly higher so that the color can still be evident even over hooded lids.
4 || Eyeliner
Don’t give up on eyeliner just yet. I personally started noticing that it’s getting more difficult to do the winged eyeliner look recently so I started smudging my liner with Q-tips to give a softer look. Another tip is to dab a darker shade of eyeshadow on the outer corners of your eyes, or to rub your eyeliner using an eyebrow brush for the same effect. Dark brown liner is recommended instead of harsh black.
5 || Foundation
More important than the actual foundation is the tool with which you will apply it at this point. Use a soft buffer brush to apply foundation even if you’re used to using your hands like me or you love your sponges. A brush allows you to evenly spread out the foundation and prevents it from settling into fine lines.
6 || Cream and Liquid
Switch your powders to creams and liquids whenever possible because powder sits in the fine lines thus emphasising them. Powder can also look uneven at times because our skins gets drier as we age.
7 || Pores
The dreaded pores become enlarged with age and with continued sun exposure. To reduce the appearance of large pores invest in primers and look for products that are light-reflecting.
8 || Lipstick
Always use a lipliner to prevent feathering or bleeding of lipstick. And try to steer clear of drying lipstick formulas. The good thing is that the new breed of matt lipsticks or matt liquid lipsticks come in non-drying formulas.
