Getting ready for a day at the beach almost feels like an exam, and we find ourselves more concerned about the bloat than the weight. You could be on a great health regime for months only to find you look a few months pregnant on the day. Just ask Jennifer Aniston, the poor woman was asked if she was pregnant… We all know what to eat to stay slim, here we sort out what not to eat a day or two before.
Fermentation bloating basically occurs when foods are poorly absorbed in the small intestine, they rapidly ferment by way of the bacteria in the GI tract. This process creates gas which leads to bloating. By the nature of our culinary culture as Arabs we are most prone to this type, so that’s what we shall focus on…
1 || Dairy
Cheese, milk and even the holy yogurt can cause bloating, dairy contains varying levels of the sugar molecule lactose which ferments in the body, creates gas bubbles and bloating. If you love yogurt Greek plain yogurt is your best bet with only 12 grams of sugar. Low and nonfat varieties contain up to 30 grams of sugar which makes them super gassy!
2 || Fruit On A Full Stomach
Fruit takes 20 minutes to digest, if you eat fruit right after a large meal, it is combined with other foods that need longer to be digested. The fruit is therefore held in the stomach with the other foods for too long, causing it to ferment and rot. This fruit fermentation causes indigestion and bloating.
3 || Coffee
When we drink coffee our stomach produces large amounts of hydrochloric acid, an acid necessary for the breakdown of proteins. The body has a limited ability to make hydrochloric acid, so drinking too much coffee will over-produce the acid, meaning that when it’s time to digest those proteins in your food there isn’t any left. This leaves us with undigested and fermenting protein which is food for intestinal bacteria, creating gases especially those rotten egg type gasses.
4 || Broccoli, Cauliflower And Beans
These vegetables are not easily digested in the stomach, once again they are fermented by bacteria and cause gas. To make these veggies easier to digest, broccoli and cauliflower should be roasted and the beans soaked overnight.
5 || Watermelon
Watermelon is very high in sugar, fructose to be exact. Fructose is not easily absorbed in the body which leads to bloating. Add watermelon as your refreshing dessert to your traditional Arabic meal and you can only imagine the gasses produced 🙁
