Accutane is a drug that uses large amounts of vitamin A to clear acne and prevent it from coming back. Everyone has a unique experience with the drug, some experiencing more benefits and less side effects than others. While accutane does get rid of acne for around 80% of those who complete a course, the possibility of it returning is possible. Having taken accutane three times, I know first hand how disappointing a relapse can be. So, I’ve compiled the top 10 tips to maintain clear skin after accutane treatment!

 

1 || Cleanse your organs

Accutane can be harsh on your liver. Thankfully, there are many natural foods and vitamins that promote liver health and provide nourishment from within. These include magnesium, vitamin C , turmeric, artichoke, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, ginger, beets, and green juices with kale, cucumber, parsley and lemon. Making these a part of your diet will allow your liver to detoxify.

2 || Monitor your health

In order to ensure long-term results post-accutane, you must monitor your blood sugar and hormonal levels, which can contribute to acne. Many acne relapses after accutane are the result of hormonal imbalances. If this is the case, lifestyle changes must be made in order to deal with these health issues and keep your acne at bay!

 

3 || Maintain a consistent face care regimen

Because accutane can leave your skin feeling perfect and indestructible, this leads many to neglect following a skincare routine. As tempting as it sometimes may be, simply washing your makeup off and calling it a night is not enough. Your skincare routine should consist of multiple steps. Double cleansing is key, starting with a gentle makeup remover to wipe the impurities and makeup on the skin’s surface. After this, use a cleanser that is suited for your skin type in order to penetrate deeper into the skin. Often, two rounds of cleansing is needed. In the morning, cleansing does not have to be as excessive. However, you must remember to apply SPF before heading outside.

Right after completing your accutane course, you will be left with extremely dry, dehydrated skin. With time, your skin will eventually become less dry. In order to facilitate this process, you must take care of your moisturizing needs just as much as you were during treatment. In addition to a non-comedogenic moisturizer, such as the one shown in the image below, you can use moisturizing face masks twice a week. Essential fatty acids such as fish oil and flax oil can also ease symptoms of dryness.

5 || Face oils are not your enemy

Face oils are often controversial, as people associate oils with acne and breakouts. However, only comedogenic oils such as mineral and synthetic oils can cause breakouts. There are various antibacterial and anti-inflammatory oils you can use to maintain healthy skin such as tea-tree oil, aloe vera oil and jojoba oil.

6 || Use scar serums to get rid of acne scars

While accutane does get rid of your acne, you may be left with unwanted scars. Thankfully, there are many great products you can use in order to gradually get rid of the scars. 7 || Exfoliate twice a week

Exfoliation should be a part of every skin-care routine. It rejuvenates the skin, getting rid of dullness and dryness. However, many exfoliants can be harsh. So, you must avoid products that contain nuts and seeds, which may be damaging.
