Being well aware of skin aging triggers is definitely getting you closer and closer to the perfect complexion, however, there exists a few habits that might be holding you back from achieving the epitome of youthful skin.. You will be surprised when you know that wearing sunscreen religiously, avoiding harsh sun exposure, cutting down on smoking and alcohol are simply NOT enough to avoid premature wrinkles from developing, in fact many of the habits that we commit on a daily basis -that might never cross your mind- have a big impact on aging your skin.. Read below, 7 ways you are unknowingly aging your skin faster…
1 || Ditching Sunscreen During Winter…
If you think that wearing sunscreen is only necessary during summertime you are very wrong! Dangerous UV rays are present all year round, hot or cold, rainy, sunny or cloudy, indoors or outdoor, those damaging rays have pretty much the same strength and will penetrate your skin causing premature aging, wrinkles, pigmentation and even skin cancer!
Bottom line: It’s so important to get in the habit of using a moisturizer with sunscreen built right in. You’ll want to apply it every morning, every day of the year.
2 || Yawning!!!
One more reason to get a good night’s rest. You won’t believe it when you realize that the simple act of yawning when you’re tired or sleep-deprived is a major culprit of aging skin.. When you yawn, the act encourages your eyes to water, which creates swelling and puffiness both at night and in the morning when you wake up. This excess fluid around the eyes weakens the elasticity of the surrounding tissue, causing an acceleration of wrinkles. The loss of elasticity is like a rubber band that’s been stretched repeatedly: at some point, it doesn’t snap back anymore, and this is what happens to the eye area.
Bottom line: Get good sleep..
3 || Ignoring Eyesight Changes..
Our eyesight weakens with time, putting off wearing the needed eyeglasses will result in wrinkles around the eye area.. Why? Because anytime you squint your eyes from bright lights or blurry vision, you’re weakening the elastin fibers around the eyes. This will accelerate the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
Bottom line: Schedule an annual exam and get prescription glasses to stay squint-free.
4 || Regularly Being Exposed To Secondhand Smoke
Fact; the levels of nicotine, tar, nitric oxide and carbon monoxide are at least twice as high in secondhand smoke… Shocking right? In fact inhaling smoke coming out of your smoking friend will harm you more that it does to her or him.. The concentration of the above toxins is higher since there is no filter at the end of the cigarette. . So, what does this mean for your skin? Simply put, you’re getting much of the skin damage that smokers can get, if not more. The collagen-destroying enzymes (MMPs) ramp up when exposed to tobacco smoke. This leads to premature wrinkling and visible aging.
Bottom line: Try to avoid secondhand smoke and always use antioxidants in your skin care products. Our go-to most favorite antioxidant? Vitamin C serum.
5 || Sipping Your Drinks Out Of Straws..
I am positive you have that WTH face by now! You should be aware that repeated facial expressions and movements will break down collagen and elastin fibers. When drinking out of a straw or a narrow bottle for that matter, you are forced to purse your lips, causing unnecessary lines and wrinkles around the mouth.
Bottom line: You should drink your beverage from a glass instead so that your mouth doesn’t have to purse so tightly.
6 || Exaggerated Exfoliation
This very common trend of using skin care products in an exaggerated manner believing that more is more when it comes to your skin is plain forbidden! Many people are doing way too many aggressive exfoliating treatments, not knowing that when doing so they are actually injuring their skin and causing what is known as a damaged moisture barrier. Results include flaking, redness, dryness, dehydration, inflammation and possible destruction of healthy cells.
Bottom line: exfoliation should not be performed daily.
7 || Ditching The Morning Face Cleanse Assuming Your Skin Is Clean..
Are you a water rinser? Think again, if by any chance you think that you wake up with clean skin -assuming you’ve cleansed the night before- is wrong! You have to wash your face every single morning all year long simply because while you sleep at night, your skin is in repair mode, which causes your skin to secrete toxins and sebum.
Bottom line: Cleanse daily as this will create a clean slate so your daytime products (especially sunscreen!) can perform their best.
