Beauty and the Neck || Are You Attending to It?

Beauty and the Neck

It doesn’t actually matter how old you are, as long as you are attending to your face, you need to make sure that you are also attending to your neck.  The neck has some of the thinnest skin and will see the signs of aging quick rapidly unless you take good care of it, as you would your face.

As we age, and we start to prevent and attempt to reverse the signs, there are some tried and tested ways of addressing the neck specifically.  They include, protecting, tightening, resurfacing, relaxing and rejuvenating.  So lets get started!

Protection

Sun protection cannot be stressed enough, and we must make a habit of applying mineral sunscreen to the face, neck and décolleté.  As always opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that is able to protect you from both UVA and UVB rays.  And a gentle reminder that you are actually susceptible to three kinds of rays, the ones from the sun which you can see and feel.  The rays from the sun that you can’t see or feel but are still there, and lastly blue rays that are emitted from your phone and computer screen.

Tightening and Lifting

Beauty and the Neck

One of the first tell-tale signs of aging of the neck is the loosening of the skin of the neck in addition to the jawline.  There are actually interconnected and should be addressed together.  Ultherapy is an non-evasive treatment that is best known for tightening and lifting of the neck and jawline.  It is customized ultrasound treatment that stimulates the production of collagen and elastin in the body by shooting ultrasound waves into the deeper layers of the skin.  The best part about Ultherapy is that the improvements continue over a 3-6 month period.  Ultherapy is recommended every 6 months.

Resurfacing

Beauty and the Neck

Skin resurfacing is recommended on the neck for two reasons, firstly sun damage and secondly general signs of aging.  Fractional resurfacing, best known as Fraxel is a microscopic laser light that is used to target specific areas below the skin’s surface.  Like any laser, the heat of the laser resurfaces the superficial layers of the skin, helping to eliminate sun damage and scars, it also stimulates a natural healing process below the skin, jump-starting collagen production and allowing for new skin to emerge.

Relaxing the Skin

Beauty and the Neck

Often times, the neck and jawline are subject to a lot of tugging and pulling of muscles that affect the texture and quality of the skin, creating bands either vertically or horizontally.  These can be remedied with Botox, which is injecting into these bands and jawline.  As always, Botox paralyses the muscles, which relaxes the area, preventing further tugging and pulling.  It is important to note that a number of people experience discomfort from these injections, this specifically happens when the injection is given too deeply.  The muscles of the neck are particularly superficial, and going too deep can affect swallowing or breathing for a short period of time.

Rejuvenating

The skin of the neck and jawline should also be addressed through the application of skin creams, growth factors, peptides and antioxidants specifically, which help to promote and protect collagen and elastin.  Growth factors are important after a certain age when the skin needs additional help in producing collagen and elastin.  The use of growth factors help improve firmness, elasticity, tone and texture.  So what are growth factors? They come in a serum form and are proteins that regulate cell growth and cell division in the skin.  They stimulate tissue regeneration and create collagen and elastin. Growth factors can also facilitate pathways for peptides and antioxidants, which drive repair. This is why they are often in skin-care products, too.
